Basis weight alone is not sufficient when selecting a nonwoven fabric. Barrier performance, tensile strength, breathability, softness and surface properties should be assessed together according to the intended use.

Structures such as SMS, SMMS and spunbond can deliver different performance balances through their layer architecture and fiber distribution. For medical applications, conformity with relevant standards and end-use conditions should also be evaluated.
